When Export Report gets stuck, shows an error, or never reaches Report Ready, start here—not the full export walkthrough. You must be signed in with at least one logged period and symptom entries inside the cycle range you selected.

When you need this article

  • Export Report shows a red error banner below the preview.
  • You tapped Export Report but Report Ready never appears.
  • A full-screen loading overlay with progress text runs for a long time and then stops without a share sheet.
  • Custom cycle range seems selected but export says Please select a date range.
  • You want step-by-step export instructions—that is a different article.

For the full path from Reports to the share sheet, see Exporting a report (PDF). For what each PDF page contains after a successful export, see Understanding the report PDF.

Check these first

  • Signed in — Export Report needs your on-device user record. If you were signed out, sign in again and reopen Export Report from the Reports header share icon.
  • At least one period start logged — Reports cannot build a range without cycle anchors. If Home or Reports look empty, see Data not showing or missing before retrying export.
  • Symptom or life-factor logs inside the selected range — a range with cycles but no daily entries can produce a very thin PDF; that is different from a hard generation failure.
  • Device storage and network — PDF generation and saving use local temporary storage; low storage or an unstable connection can interrupt export.
The in-app preview carousel may load quickly while the Export Report button still builds a fresh PDF from your logs. Focus on whether Report Ready appears after you tap Export Report—not only on preview page images.

Error messages on Export Report

  • Please select a date range — Custom is active but no valid start and end dates are set. See Fix a custom date range below.
  • Failed to generate report: … — the app could not build pages for the current range (message after the colon may vary). Try a shorter preset range, then retry.
  • Failed to save PDF file — generation finished but writing the temporary PDF failed. Free device storage and retry.
  • No PDF file available to share — export did not produce a file to pass to the share sheet. Clear the error, change range if needed, and tap Export Report again.

Try a shorter or different cycle range

Large windows (for example 12 cycles) take longer and are more likely to stall on older devices. Switch to 1 cycle or 3 cycles, wait for the preview area to settle, then export again. For how cycle range pills and date spans work, see Choosing a cycle range.

In the app

Open Red Tent PMDD to see the live screen walkthrough for this step.

Download the app
01
Cycle Range
On Export Report, tap a smaller preset—1 cycle or 3 cycles—or pick Custom with a narrow span. Changing range clears the previous error banner when generation restarts.
02
Wait
After changing range, let any Generating report... or progress text finish on preview pages before tapping Export Report again.
03
Export Report
Tap the primary Export Report button (square-and-arrow-up icon). A full-screen loading overlay may appear with step messages such as aggregating data or converting PDF.
04
Report Ready
When generation succeeds, an alert titled Report Ready asks you to tap OK before the share sheet opens.

Fix a custom date range

If the Custom pill shows placeholder text or export fails with Please select a date range, reopen the picker and apply a start and end date that include logged days. Full Custom steps live in Choosing a cycle range.

In the app

Open Red Tent PMDD to see the live screen walkthrough for this step.

Download the app
01
Custom
Tap Custom on Export Report. If Custom is already selected, tap Custom again to reopen the picker.
02
Select Date Range
In the sheet, choose dates that cover days you actually logged—not only period markers with no symptom entries.
03
Apply
Confirm the range. The Custom pill should show a date span (Jan 5 – Feb 3 style) instead of placeholder text.
04
Cancel without dates
If you dismiss the picker without choosing dates, Red Tent may revert to the 6 cycles default—export again only after a valid range is shown.

Retry export and wait for Report Ready

01
Export Report
Each tap rebuilds the PDF from your current Cycle Range and Patient Name settings. Wait for the loading overlay to finish—avoid force-quitting mid-export.
02
Progress messages
Messages such as preparing pages, converting PDF, or preparing share are normal on large ranges. If progress stops and an error banner appears, note the text and try a shorter range.
03
Report Ready
Success shows Report Ready with Your report PDF was generated. Tap OK to open the system share sheet.
04
Share sheet
Pick Save to Files, AirDrop, Mail, or another destination. If the sheet is empty, see No PDF file available to share in Error messages above.
05
Still failing
Force-quit Red Tent once, reopen Reports → Export Report, select 1 cycle, and retry. Persistent errors after a shorter range may mean missing underlying data—see Data not showing or missing.
🔒The PDF contains health and symptom data from your logs. After Report Ready, review the share destination before sending—see Privacy and legal for broader sharing context.

Thin PDF or missing data in the report

  • Export succeeded but tables look empty — you may have cycles in range with few or no symptom logs. Log more days, narrow the range to cycles you actively tracked, and export again.
  • Expected sections missing — page layout and section names are described in Understanding the report PDF.
  • Data visible in Home but not in Reports range — your Overview cycle range may exclude those dates; align range on Reports Overview first, then open export.
